Info Facts
Drug addiction is a treatable disorder. Through treatment that is tailored to individual needs, patients can learn to control their condition and live normal, productive lives. Like people with diabetes or heart disease, people in treatment for drug addiction learn behavioral changes and often take medications as part of their treatment regimen. *

Treatment Options

Although the Young Adults treatment track is very similar to treatment programs used for older adults and all other addicts, this track takes into consideration the needs of young people. The treatment strategies used are appropriate and viable for young adult addicts and are aimed at breaking strong denial that exists at high rates in young users. Many young people experience denial on a number of different levels including their own denial as well as the denial of a problem by friends and possibly other loved ones. Younger peer groups often site drug addiction and alcoholism as ‘phases’ that will pass with time, not as severe diseases.

Gulf Coast Recovery’s Young Adults Program targets these misconceptions and helps provide young adults with a stronger basis in sobriety. For many young people the initial treatment process begins with an intervention performed by a specialist with the help of family members and loved ones. During the intervention process the initial layer of denial, even admitting that there is a problem at all, is broken through, and the young person agrees to try treatment as a solution.

After the intervention has taken place, many addicts have the tendency to want to back out of treatment and go on with old behaviors. The intervention specialist helps to work out these issues and tries to relate through feelings and experiences. Once the young person is admitted into treatment, an assessment will be made as to what specific issues and needs the individual has. Some young adult treatment tracks include family therapy if there have been issues related to the young person’s use and behaviors within the home, or the parents need to set boundaries and express feelings with the addict.

For other young adults they must first undergo the painful, but necessary process of detoxification, during which the physical body is cleansed of all chemicals and toxins. This process is most safely performed in a medical facility and the patient is then transferred to a treatment environment. Individual and group treatment are also included in the Young Adult Program. Individual treatment serves to help young people open up about their feelings and be honest with another person about their addiction. Group therapy sessions provide a sense of community for young people and assure them that they are not alone in the recovery process.

At Gulf Coast Recovery our programs are designed to offer the best possible chance for success in recovery. Young adults are not immune to addiction, but rather they have been underrepresented in the substance abuse treatment community. We recognize how crucial initial sobriety is and have dedicated ourselves to providing superior care. If you or someone you love needs treatment for an addiction, please contact us and find out what options you have. Recovery is just a phone call away.
