Info Facts
Drug addiction is a treatable disorder. Through treatment that is tailored to individual needs, patients can learn to control their condition and live normal, productive lives. Like people with diabetes or heart disease, people in treatment for drug addiction learn behavioral changes and often take medications as part of their treatment regimen. *

Intervention

An intervention is a way that family members and loved ones of a substance abuser can help him/her to get help. With the help of an intervention specialist, loved ones are able to confront the addict in a compassionate manner that will hopefully lead him/her down the road of recovery. People close to addicts often bear the brunt of lies and promises so characteristic of addiction. Although people let the addict know how they feel and that they are worried, often times the addict is unable to hear, or even care about what others are saying.

The denial within the cycle of addiction is powerful that it can cloud the minds of even the brightest of people. Instead of admitting there is a problem related to alcohol or drug use, the user will deny, argue, fight, yell and become violent in order to protect the addiction.

In other cases, the addict or alcoholic has not hit an absolute bottom – either physically, emotionally or mentally, however loved ones see a progressive pattern that is only getting worse with time. These circumstances warrant an intervention and can save the user many more years of painful addiction. For most young people this is the case since they have usually only been using drugs or alcohol for a limited amount of time. Even still, young people are at a higher risk for developing addictive patterns because their bodies are still developing.

Young people, still maturing naturally, do not want to heed warnings from parents and loved ones about their behavior. Lying, stealing, sneaking out and displaying weird or unusual behavior over an extended period of time may be curbed through an intervention and following treatment process. Family members may have used bribery and every other imaginable strategy to help the young adult stop using, but with no avail. Instead, these behaviors are enabling the young user and all methods of communication have failed.

An intervention in the case of a young person has a very high probability of working and it is also one of the only known ways to get through to this type of addict. Once the intervention has taken place the family members are able to design a plan for treatment and the journey of recovery can begin.

At Gulf Coast Recovery we understand the importance of offering programs that cater to young adult alcoholics and addicts and are aware of their special needs. If someone you love has a problem with substance abuse but is still unable to admit it, you do not have to wait until they have hit bottom. Instead contact us today and learn how an intervention can save a life.
